Permitting Process For Building
I want to make sure my project is not delayed by months due to the permitting process. According to the Uniform Building Code (UBC), “no building or structure shall be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished unless separate permits for each building or structure have first been obtained.”
This process requires the structural analysis of most material handling equipment, storage systems, support platforms, mezzanines, coolers, and the like. City, county, state and fire departments evaluate to ensure conformity to local regulations. While this effort usually takes from three to six weeks it can take as long as three to four months. In most instances, full compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is also required before issuing a permit.
The key is to start the permit evaluation process as soon as possible and get it right the first time. Egress patterns, parking availability, the need for fire vents, class of product combustibility, and the need for earthquake walls are just a sampling of what has to be professionally engineered and stamped into a new project. Upon permitting, there are still follow-up inspections from both municipal as well as contracted agents to inspect connection points, electrical installation, fire hydrant location, and, in general, to verify that the overall system or building was installed in accordance to plan.
