Scanning Technologies

Scanning technologies are used for automatic identification of goods in motion or at rest. With conveyor based systems, these include 2D and 3D bar code laser and camera scanners, RFID tags (Radio Frequency Identification) and text recognition via digital cameras and video. They can be used in combination, for example, validating the printed text on a box against what is presented on a label.
For scanning purposes, totes, cartons, pallets, and individually packaged items have to be separated so that the beginning and trailing edges can be detected. For RFID, product separation is not always required where goods in mass – (as in parcel handling systems) – may be deployed; however, product separation may still be required if downstream sortation or routing is required.
